Workers at the advice centre offer advice on most housing and homelessness problems in both face to face advice sessions and over the telephone to clients themselves and to other agencies. In addition, we give advice on related matters for example on welfare benefits, access to social fund, furniture provision and debt. We aim for a holistic approach with the emphasis on exploring the options with clients and promoting self-help when appropriate.

Enquiries at the advice centre range from those wanting access to emergency hostel provision, to those attempting to secure permanent accommodation through a variety of routes. Our client group is very varied; there is no typical NOMAD client. Not all the people we see are homeless or threatened with homelessness, we also see clients with a wide range of other housing problems including problems with disrepair, housing benefit, those suffering racial harassment, domestic violence or illegal eviction and those who simply need to move to more suitable accommodation.

Where necessary we make home visits to people who find it difficult to come into the advice centre. In addition we represent clients at possession hearings and local authority appeals.

When we are unable to help a client ourselves we refer them on to agencies with the appropriate skills thereby adopting a multi-agency approach to address the client's needs.
